The Social and Political Action Advisory Committee, chaired by Highlander LaNae Caldwell, presented a series of Estate Planning Seminars conducted by Highlander Marlene Johnson, Esq., on a quarterly schedule, over the 2021 calendar year. This project was designed to educate the public and assist the Highlander’s organization to meet its community service outreach objective.
The seminars, which were open to Highlanders and the public, provided vital information on various tools needed to insure one’s estate is properly managed upon untimely incapacitation or death. Young or older, rich or not so rich, everyone needs to have an estate plan in place to make sure wishes are carried out and that there is a simplified and speedy transfer of assets to the next generation to ensure beneficiaries are protected.
The free seminars by zoom were widely attended and participants had the opportunity to listen to an in-depth explanation of what estate planning means and the various products (i.e., wills, trusts, powers of attorney, health directives, etc.) needed to execute a successful estate plan. After the seminar, attendees could request a one-on-one, confidential consultation with Highlander Johnson for recommendations based on specific needs and necessary legal work, if requested. Attendees recognized the importance and value of the information, not just for seniors as often thought but also for younger people, especially those with minor children. A key take-away was because we live in such turbulent times, it is more imperative than ever to take the appropriate steps to protect assets and ultimately loved ones.
